George Hrab presents: The Entire History of the Universe (abridged)

Bethlehem’s own George Hrab is an amazing. high-energy multi-instrumental madman. His lyrics are filled with hilarious warped storytelling that will have your jaw hanging open, and his music is tight, rhythmic, and totally absorbing, with shades of Frank Zappa, Yes, XTC, Mozart, and Steely Dan. Fun, intelligent, skewed, and a totally mind-bending good time. He is here tonight as a solo performance, featuring songs and selected readings from his first book; "Non-Coloring Book". NOT folk music, and NOT to be missed.

Les Sampou Trio

Les Sampou represents the new direction of folk music. She is a fiery performer and nasty slide guitarist rooted in the craft and passion of the blues. Les has become a formidable guitarist, singer and songwriter with numerous awards, four acclaimed albums and a loyal following. This visit features Lou with her trio. Bassist Dan DeLeo, a New Orleans native, is fluent in Cajun, zydeco and swamp, pop and country. Guitarist and singer Mark Cunningham, born and raised outside of Boston is equally at home in acoustic folk as he is in rock and roll and twangabilly. Godfrey’s is gonna rock the block tonight! “This is one singer who doesn't fit neatly into any one category - blues or folk or acoustic rock - but she is able to command the stage as few acoustic solo performers can." The Patriot Ledger, Stephen Ide.

Pierre Bensusan  – PEARLS SERIES

Kicking off a weekend of guitar fireworks is Pierre Bensusan (ben soo-ZAHN). “Guitar genius” is a phrase that has often been bandied about, but you can look no farther than one Pierre Bensusan to experience the depth of its meaning. Pierre is more than capable in mixing folk, jazz, blues, and Celtic elements in a way that suggests a truly borderless world. And he can run the gamut of heartbreaking romanticism to edgy and dangerously exciting exploration. But he remains a poet of the guitar, recognized by other guitarists as the pinnacle of acoustic artistry. As Leo Kottke has said, “Pierre’s music gives me the shakes. No other guitarist shares his strange gifts of sophistication, accessibility and downright joy.” A stellar evening!

Peter Lang & Michael GuleziaN - a Martin Guitar Showcase

Grammy-nominated Peter Lang has evolved into the elder genius and senior statesman of the genre he helped to define. A pioneer of roots oriented acoustic guitar forms, Peter was a mentor and spiritual guide to John Fahey. Peter’s music is featured on the platinum-selling release, “John Fahey, Peter Lang, Leo Kottke.” "A guitarist's guitar player who rivals Leo Kottke and Peter Ostroushko." - St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Michael Gulezian is the youngest artist ever signed to Takoma Records. He’s a phenomenal technical guitarist with the rare ability to transcend his own virtuosity, creating music that touches and moves people at the deepest level. He's been called the musical link between John Fahey and Michael Hedges.  "virtuosic ferocity … Michael never loses sight of the melody, or the drama of his compositions." - Acoustic Guitar Magazine.

Todd Wolfe

Now for a completely different take on guitar playing; gritty blues at its most visceral, with grinding licks and grungy hooks, or it can be laid back and acoustic. Not only is his guitar work first class, but also his writing and his showmanship, and it is no wonder that he has had songs covered by performers like Stevie Nicks and has written and toured with Sheryl Crow for close to five years. With four worldwide albums and countless tours of Europe, he is obviously world class, and that's why he is right here at Godfrey's. He is joined here by Dave Hollingsworth on drums, Michael Fossa on keys, Ed Canova on bass, and special guests. This show is for those who concentrate real hard on having a good time. No disappointments allowed!

Pat Wictor and Jon Shain
– A DOUBLE EVENING at GODFREY’S and WILDFLOWER CAFÉ

Once again Godfrey’s teams up with our neighbors at Wildflower Café to present a tag team evening of great music. Godfrey’s show will run from 8 pm till 9:30, and Wildflower’s will be from 10 till 11:30.
Pat Wictor’s snaky, sizzling slide guitar work, his clear, steady voice with a riveting falsetto and his unique, articulate songwriting have earned him a following at Godfrey’s and anywhere else there are hip and young-thinking folks. He will be joined on one of our special double/double evenings by Jon Shain, a veteran singer-songwriter who's been turning heads for years with his words, his fiery acoustic guitar work, and his evolved musical style - combining improvised piedmont blues with bluegrass, swing, and ragtime. Come in and get a taste of both performers twice in one night!

The Kennedys

One can put Pete and Maura Kennedy up there in the pantheon of “hardest-working duo” in folk music, spreading their jangly, upbeat folk pop music on two guitars, great harmonies and songs, and enough gas to get them to their next concert. The couple has honed their 60s Pop Rock sound, writing and performing thoughtful songs, and gathering tales of the open road (and, let’s not forget their incredible boutique of far-out clothes!). The Kennedy’s are a Godfrey’s favorite and we hope you’ll be here to welcome them back.

Rani Arbo and Daisy Mayhem

Sure, Rani Arbo is a gifted performer – great voice, impeccable fiddler. But, what's a daisy mayhem? Wicked percussion, sublime lead singing, great harmonies, sparkling original songs, and a deep repertoire. Four people who share an irresistible chemistry on stage. A young, hip, crackerjack string band in love with American music. And Rani and the lads are returning to our humble stage again! The Boston Globe described it as "neo old-timey with cosmopolitan splashes of contemporary pop and jazz." It's an exuberant mix of musical idioms, held together by superb musicianship, impeccable taste, and the band's charismatic vocals. A stage show dips into country blues, vintage swing, modern songwriter fare, and Appalachian fiddle tunes and songs. It's a bracing fusion: listen to Arbo deliver Bessie Jones' version of "O Death" accompanied by fat, bluesy guitar solos and a groove that owes allegiance to the Meters, and you'll see. This is a band that picks up what's lying around — from tin cans to traditional music — and creates something new.

Bob Malone with opener Rob Ritchie

Award-winning pianist/singer/songwriter Bob Malone is a distinctive mix of blues, funk, New Orleans soul, and solid pop sensibilities in the style of great piano-men like Dr. John, The Reverend Billy C. Wirtz, Professor Longhair, and Randy Newman all rolled into one. His extraordinary charisma and outstanding musicianship, likened in review to "the fervor of a man on fire," are as bold and winning as the humor and depth of his 'tell-it-like-it-is' songwriting, delivered in a raspy voice reminiscent of a young Tom Waits. Backyard Blues Magazine describes him as "a raconteur of the human condition," with a dry wit and lyrical honesty often compared to John Hiatt or Bob Dylan. A consummate pianist and showman, Bob Malone spans the musical spectrum from full tilt boogie and hard driven funk to the seamless melodies of great ballads that linger like classic standards. 'Nuff said!

Opening for Bob Malone will be another pianist and songwriter, Rob Ritchie, late of the Canadian "superfolkies" Tanglefoot. Come out for a "Rob and Bob" evening!

Beaucoup Blue

Sometimes we discover that some great music lives right next door – how have we missed this fabulous father-son duo up to now? Coming to us by way of a recommendation from Pat Wictor to consider for showcasing at the most recent NERFA Conference, Beaucoup Blue’s David and Adrian Mowry have been playing and singing together since Adrian’s teenage years. Although blues is a staple in their repertoire, they also base their love in music from folk, soul, R&B, jazz, country, and bluegrass. A handsome range of six- and twelve-string guitars, slide guitar, Dobro and the two soulful voices blend together like only family members can, affecting audiences wherever they perform. We hope you’ll come and hear for yourself what this Philadelphia-based duo has to offer.
