SOCRATES’ CAFÉ

Socrates’ Café will be back next month. Questions, questions, questions. They disturb. They provoke. They exhilarate. They intimidate. Welcome to Socrates’ Café. Join us for a philosophical dialog in the tradition of Socrates. This is philosophy for everyone; just bring the courage of your convictions and the courage to have your convictions challenged! November’s topic: How close are we (as a country, as a world) to the collapse? Many modern thinkers are comparing our stage in history to be reminiscent of Rome before the collapse.

Dakota Dave HulL  and JEREMY WALLACE

Hailed by everyone from Dave Van Ronk to Doc Watson, from the Washington Post to downbeat, Dakota Dave Hull’s guitar style spans a wide musical geography to create an infectious, uniquely personal blend of jazz, ragtime, folk, blues, Western swing, and vintage pop. Most of all, Dakota Dave’s music is great fun. As Ranger Doug of Riders in the Sky puts it, “There is an imp within Dave Hull that always expresses itself on the fret board; a witty, intelligent yet respectful imp who frolics in his music, an imp Dakota Dave simply absorbs into the heart of his style.”

Dave Van Ronk served as a mentor and friend during Wallace’s formative years as an artist and introduced him to the music of Leadbelly, Furry Lewis, and Charlie Patton. Somewhere along the way, Wallace’s personal lyrics merged with the lives of lonely fictional characters – the unlucky, the heartbroken, blue collar joes who drank too much, smoked too much, loved too much for their own good. "Wallace has emerged as one of the most exciting additions to our roster in recent years. Discovering his 'old school' whiskey-and-cigarette voice, vintage guitar, and unforgettable lyrics is pure heaven for anyone serious about American roots music." – Caffe Lena, Saratoga Springs, NY

Mike Cross

Mike Cross has been returning to Godfrey's for many years and we relish his wonderful talents as an entertainer and storyteller. As a solo performer, Mike simply wraps up himself and his audience in a truly joyous evening of rollicking fun. Bounding from Irish fiddle tunes to 12-string bottleneck blues to fast flat-picking bluegrass, Mike sings and cavorts with the audience so easily, you'd think you were sitting with him on his porch in North Carolina. It’s an awfully good time!

Catie CurtiS with opener Lindsay Mac

Deemed a “folk rock goddess” by New Yorker Magazine, Catie Curtis is a strong woman making strong music along the lines of Sheryl Crow, Michelle Shocked, and Shawn Colvin. With a string of CDs and much FM airplay, Catie has charted an indie course through the field of songwriting that has made her both controversial and popular, as her early hit Radical shows. This is music with an ear to the human condition, not lightweight fluff, rocking urban music with a punch. Pick up Catie's latest release, Long Night Moon, at the concert! "(Producer Lorne) Entress has skillfully fashioned and burnished a classic Catie Curtis song collection." - FolkWax

PETER MULVEY with special guest ANTJE DUVEKOT

Peter’s history at Godfrey’s goes back to the night in the 1990s when Chris Smither brought young Peter along on tour to introduce him to his audience, and we are so grateful. Years later, Peter stands on his own, rigorously touring from Ireland to Alaska, continuing to refine his craft and soak up the juju of masters past and present. Like Chris, Peter continues to best himself, illustrated with his latest release Knuckleball Suite, his ninth album and another produced by kindred spirit David “Goody” Goodrich. Live performance is what defines Peter’s work and is where he shines. We hope you’ll join us in welcoming Peter on his return to our humble stage.

Peter’s special guest this evening is Kerrville Folk Festival’s new song winner Antje Duvekot. Having recorded and written with the legendary Celtic group Solas, Antje’s debut album Big Dream Boulevard was produced by Seamus Egan and released to critical acclaim. Pick one up after the concert!

Bill Morrissey with opener Kelly Flint

Bill Morrissey plays a peculiar brand of New England Blues, sprung from the backwaters of the Northeast — and New Hampshire in particular. While he has made his name through the circuit of coffeehouses around the country, his music stands alone in the folk world for its detail, clarity, and literary insight. His niche as a singer and songwriter has been established through perseverance and sheer strength of talent. "They call Morrissey a folksinger, but to me, he is New England's own bluesman — not hot and humid Delta blues, but deep snow and sharp pine blues.” – Robert Olmstead.

EnRoute Magazine says “April’s strings burn with energy, whether she is playing waltzes, airs, reels, or polkas.” April will be fronting her four-piece band with guitar, bass, and percussion. Diabolical and dynamic, soothing and soaring, April Verch will invigorate you, calm you, and charm you.
