Jim Weider

Jim Weider, former member of the legendary group The Band, produces an unbelievably high-energy mix of blues, jazz, rock and funk he calls ProJECT PERCoLATor. It’s loud, it’s raucous, and it’s a whole lot of fun. The band features Jim Weider on guitar, Rodney Holmes (a total and complete MAD MAN!) on drums, Mitch Stein on guitar, and Steve Lucas on bass. Anyone who heard them at Musikfest last summer can attest to the fact that these guys ROCK! The band has become our traditional year-opener, and easily sold out last year so get your tickets (or advance seats) early. Tapers welcome. Always glad to have Jim and his band back to Godfrey’s.

Red Molly with opener Jason Spooner trio - Sold Out!

We love Red Molly! A trio combining the talents of singer/instrumentalists Laurie MacAllister, Abbie Gardner, and Carolann Solebello, Red Molly has been steadily gaining a following all around the area and are regular guests at Musikfest and Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, where they were voted “Best New Artists”. Weaving their voices in harmony over a myriad of strings - guitar, banjo, mandolin, and Dobro - Red Molly's repertoire includes carefully selected original and cover material, ranging from Appalachian ballads to 20th-century pop/country standards and contemporary folk. Resting on the belief that great songs shine with minimal handling, Red Molly digs down to the root of a song with simple, uncluttered arrangements, leaving plenty of room for three voices to carry it skyward. Lovely!

Jason Spooner's writing style continues to emerge as a crucial strength that sets this Portland, Maine-based artist apart from the fray. Jason hovers in a unique space between the literal and the psychological. As a writer, he often provides enough detail to ignite the listener's imagination while enabling them to deliver some personal experience to the equation. Jason was a finalist in the 2007 Mountain Stage NewSong Contest held in New York City.

Tanglefoot

Watch out! Here come those Canadians again! - Tanglefoot, a thunderous live band with a reputation for spectacular vocal harmonies and instrument fireworks, are also a band of adept songwriters who specialize in portraying the Canadian experience. Intelligent, well-written folk-influenced songs played with hell-bent, rampaging abandon… that may be why Tanglefoot was once described as "Stan Rogers meets Van Halen." And after more than twenty years of performing, this Canadian roots institution is stronger than ever with an impressive recent addition of Sandra Swanell’s violin and viola. The lads (and lassie) of Tanglefoot  always make Godfrey's a stop on their southern tour, warming up the club on a cold January night...or two! They sold out last year, so instead of squeezing two shows into one evening, we are giving you a choice of nights this time around, Thursday or Friday.

Eilen Jewell with opener Brittany Ann  - sold out!

Eilen Jewell and her band first wowed us when WXLV brought her to Emmaus for a members’ concert early last spring, around the release of her second album, Letters From Sinners & Strangers. Her music transported us back in time about 50 years, to a black-and-white world near the roots of true Americana. Yet 27-year-old Eilen’s (rhymes with feelin’) voice is new, and timeless. Nothing about roots is retro in her universe. Her lyrics are original yet feel immediately familiar, lived-in, knowing. And the melodies — expertly performed by a first-rate band — carry an easy, memorable groove. Eilen’s band – drummer Jason Beek, Jerry Miller on electric and steel guitar, and Johnny Sciascia covering the low end on upright bass – are always seconding, but never detracting from, her hushed vocals. The Boston Globe said, “… will remind some of Gillian Welch. Also like Welch, her writing is both intimate and vivid, classically framed and closely observed.” You’ve heard her compelling songs on the radio. Don’t miss this chance to catch Eilen Jewell live on our humble stage.

Jeffrey Gaines

Jeffrey Gaines has become a rare item on the folk scene today. He has redefined the solo guitar and voice as a powerful pop sound that defies ordinary limitations. Raised in Harrisburg, PA, the teen-aged Gaines played guitar in garage bands covering The Who, The Kinks, and The Jam. He soon set out on his own, releasing his critically acclaimed, self-titled, first album, garnering four stars from The Philadelphia Inquirer, describing Gaines as “…an ethereal soul...insistent, impassioned, full of self-knowledge.” Four albums since have solidified his reputation as a true artist. The Boston Globe declared that “Gaines’ soulful, wounded vocals make a case for his being one of pop’s finest singers…an artist who deserves far more attention than some of his more hyped, yet less talented peers.” Mojo noted, “This established soul-folkie’s sexy growl has an underlying edge, making it a memorable album. Heartfelt, unpretentious.” Jeffrey’s spontaneity on stage has gained him (pun intended) a wonderfully loyal following, and we welcome him back to Godfrey’s. Don’t miss it!
