Mike & Ruthy \ LisaBeth & Maggie

Since their first meeting in 1998, Ruth Ungar and Michael Merenda shared a special combination of writing, singing, and musicianship. Seven years on the international folk festival circuit with their folk-rock string-band, The Mammals, further honed their writing and instrumental talents. Today, it’s their new and original creations that hint at love, pain and earthly beauty, which are most captivating to their growing audience. Come see why!

LisaBeth Weber and Maggie Marshall have been performing together for nearly the life of The Mammals. One night in a song circle, Maggie surprised LisaBeth by singing along with her in perfect harmony - on Every song. You may have heard LisaBeth’s songs on NPR’s Cartalk, Philadelphia Folk Festival and on WXPN. Her lyrics and catchy melodies capture life’s situations in all their humor, with Maggie keeping the beat on upright bass, enhancing the music with her stellar harmonies

John McEuen

A broad spectrum of music Americana, with a bit of "the old country" music thrown in for good measure, has made John McEuen known as America's instrumental poet. A founding member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in summer of 1966, multi-instrumentalist McEuen’s music and other talents have appeared in television specials, film scoring, unusual award winning CDs and concert production. Onstage, John incorporates his vintage instruments with instrumental wizardry that keeps the audience entranced. His love for the history of acoustic music and his joy at being onstage is evident to all in his audience. John has recorded over 30 albums, including the platinum-selling Will The Circle Be Unbroken, which was instigated by John and conceived by the band's manager/producer (John's brother) Bill McEuen in 1971. Come out and welcome John in his return to Godfrey’s humble stage!

Walt Michael & Co.

Walt Michael and Company is all about crossing the borders among traditional, bluegrass, and classical and they have been doing it longer than most, with over twenty years of touring, still setting the standard with their gentle yet passionate music. Walt makes the hammered dulcimer sing and dance. He also proves his virtuosity on guitar. And with Alexander Mitchell on violin, guitar, and mandolin, Ralph Gordon on bass and cello and Rob Caswell on guitar and banjo, their music spins instrumental stories. It’s a pleasure to have them back.

Lou and Peter Berryman

Godfrey’s is always proud to welcome the return of our friends Lou and Peter Berryman, masters of silly yet philosophical music! Accompanying themselves on guitar and accordion, they use melodies rooted in folk and Broadway styles to carry their incredibly clever poetry, which drips with satire and even-handed social commentary. Their songs of the perils that await kids who say the “F” word or don’t eat their vegetables, as well as other gems, have been enriching the repertoires of Anne Hills, Claudia Schmidt, Garrison Keillor, Michael Cooney, and others for years. And nobody does their songs better than Peter & Lou themselves!

Michael Manring

We were introduced to – and blown away by – Michael’s live performance when he accompanied our own John Gorka here last October. Hailed as the world’s leading solo bassist, Michael has been pushing back the boundaries of what’s possible on the bass guitar for over two decades. While his technical skill and innovations always make an impression, it is his ability to communicate on a profound emotional level that most touches listeners. Tom Darter, editor of Keyboard magazine wrote: "...The enlightenment came most from feeling (seeing, hearing) the joy Michael felt to be playing...his brand of transcendental chops and musical understanding...was all in the service of the final outcome, the joy of making music." Building on the conceptions of his teacher, the late bass legend Jaco Pastorius, Michael has developed a new approach to the instrument that includes unorthodox tunings, techniques and methodologies, garnering along the way two gold records, Grammy and Bammie nominations, a Berklee School of Music Distinguished Alumni Award, and numerous other awards. PS – following the John Gorka concert last year, Michael joined John and Susan Werner for a surprise appearance at our Open Mike – history in the making!

Beppe Gambetta

We welcome back a phenomenal Italian acoustic guitarist, Beppe Gambetta, who is no stranger to Godfrey's or the American guitar scene. Beppe has collaborated with masters of the acoustic scene - Gene Parsons, Tony Trischka - on ambitious projects such as reviving and contemporizing the energy of the "brother" duets with guitar master Dan Crary, while drawing on traditional European and American guitar techniques to develop his own original style. An accomplished author and teacher, Beppe wrote the first Italian manual on flatpicking and recorded many instructional videos, as well as writing and publishing his own recipe book. Tonight will be a saucy and tasty night indeed!

Vance GilberT with opener Bob Simat

A Vance Gilbert performance is: a spellbinding live show, a deliriously virtuosic voice, an accomplished guitarist, outrageous, edgy humor, and, oh, that songwriting! Gilbert has taken audiences across the country by storm. "With the voice of an angel, the wit of a devil, and the guitar playing of a god," wrote the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. He has been termed one of the quintessential musical poets of our times, and his stage persona is tremendously sparkling and fresh. We always look forward to Vance’s return.
