LETTER to MEMBERS

Warm Greetings!

I remember when I was growing up, that the approaching New Year was often represented in illustrations of a really old guy, and a little diapered baby – the old one creaking “away” on his cane, the baby crawling along to join us, as we leave the old year in the past, and welcome the new one with all its shining new hopes, dreams and expectations. 

In the music world, it is delightful to see the younger folks picking up the baton, and continuing the tradition, as it were - and in the true sense of folk music, adding their own art to the mix.  We are reminded consistently in places like Facebook, where videos by younger artists show up with ever more impact than the ones before – by our friends Anthony da Costa and Brittany Ann, to name only two. 

David Jacobs-Strain, April Verch, Tin Bird Choir, Girlyman, The Duhks, Eilen Jewell, Eric Steckel, Steppin’ In It, Sarah Ayers, Ollabelle, Anais Mitchell, Burning Bridget Cleary, The Youngers, Raina Rose – the list goes on and on… 

Very different from the old year as described earlier, our young-at-heart artists live on in their tradition as well, and thankfully, continue to bring their joy to us as they cross our stage again:  folks like Chris Smither, Steve Forbert, Garnet Rogers, the Ramblers, Bill Staines, Eric Taylor, Malcolm Holcombe – a few names from an infinite list…  Even John Gorka, Peter Mulvey, Dar Williams, and Susan Werner were still young twenty-somethings when they first appeared on our stage. 

Thanks in part to our devoted and generous members, Godfrey’s will celebrate 34 years – a lifetime for some - of presenting the best in live music performances this March, turning our annual Birthday Bash into a members-only concert, featuring Eilen Jewell and our own Dave Fry.  To recognize and show our appreciation to our membership base, this event is free to members; check our web site for more details.
